Media representations

1.
Media representations are studied through the portrayals of different social groups, such as age, social class, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and disability.

I think this statement is about how through media studies movies are now able to better represent different social groups correctly. I feel that this stamen mentions how the representation of different cultures, ages, social classes, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability has been improving due to media studies. One movie that does a good job of showing the representation of another culture is "The woman king." This movie shows how a kingdom lived and survived even at the worst of times. We learn about their native dances, weaponry, clothing, and methods of healing. While this film does a good job representing this kingdom, I don't think all media accurately represent every social group it covers. I know this because I've seen multiple statements made on a specific social group that contradicts each other.

4.
The wealthy are presented as aspirational, the middle-class perspective is considered universal, and the working class is often considered a 'social problem' in the media. Media representations of ethnic minority groups is often associated with racist stereotypes and minorities are portrayed as threats.

I think this statement represents the preexisting notion that the wealthy are better that the lower classes. The idea that the wealthy are classier and more important than the middle and lower classes are often portrayed throughout media. An example where this is used is the movie "The menu." This movie does a good job of showing how entitled wealthy people can be and how they often time feel they are more deserving than others. From an outside perspective, the wealthy seems to be living a life of luxury, eating from expensive restaurants, but then we find out this is not the case. This expensive meal turns out to be their last as it is a trick from the head chef to teach them a lesson. The secret middle/lower class attendant reviles herself and she is let go and live as she has not committed the same acts as the wealthy. I don't think all media portrays every social group correctly, this is because I've seen so many different types of living situations that supposably fall under middle-class living. The same can be said about the upper and lower classes.
