Sounds in film

1) Diegetic sound - Is the original sound used when filming a scene. 

In a movie or film diegetic is sound that a viewer can identify ether by visual or inference. 
This type of sound is great when wanting the audience to focus on the dialogue and character development. 

Ex) An example of diegetic sound is a character's voice when speaking, the roar of a speeding car, or the bang of a revolver. A movie that uses diegetic sound is Car's. This movie uses speeding car sound effects in it.

2) Non-diegetic- Is sound added during post-production of the movie or film. Non-diegetic is the sound that the characters cannot hear.

In a movie non- diegetic is great when wanting the audience to feel a certain way like (anxious, uncertain, joyful) about a specific scene or character. 

Ex) An example of a Non-diegetic sound is the specific adventurous music that is played in Pirates of the Caribbean when they are about to on an adventure.

3) Ambient sound - Is the background sound in a clip or scene. 

In a film an ambient sound is used when a sound from the background is played. This allows the audience to better understand the setting and what is happening in a scene.

Ex) An example is ambient sound is wind blowing, water falling, office rumbles, traffic jam, forest murmurs, and even characters muttering. Bird box is a movie where wind blowing is used.

4) Voiceover - Is when an off-screen character is speaking in a scene of a movie. 

In a movie or film a voiceover is dialoged that's spoken by a character that is not on screen. This allows the audience to better understand the storyline.  

Ex) Animated movies and films are great examples of voiceovers due to everything the characters say being a voiceover. An example of a voiceover in a movie is the song "your welcome" in moana. 


5) Foley - Is custom sounds made in post-production that are everyday sounds. 

In a film foley is any custom-made everyday sound. Foley allows the existing audio of the film to be enhanced. 

Ex) an example of foley in a movie is if the movie has sounds like footsteps, door opening/slamming, glass breaking, paper folding, and many more. A show Friends is a show where a door slam effect is used.
